How To Apply for Your Texas LTC
Here are detailed instructions on how to go about applying for your license, submitting all required documents, and completing the process efficiently and accurately.
The Texas Department of Public Safety prefers applicants to use their online (internet) application process, and it is faster. Paper applications are still available.
NOTE: The CHL-100 Certificate of Training form you received from the LTC class is good for 2 years if you want to delay your license application awhile to spread out the cost.
Here are the steps:
1. Gather Information – You will need your driver's license and credit card to start the online application process. You will also need the dates and addresses where you have lived and worked the last five years.
2. Go Online – Go to the Texas DPS LTC application website by clicking HERE.
3. Enter and Schedule – You will enter your personal information and pay the license fee on the first couple of screens. You will also choose a location for and schedule and pay for the electronic fingerprinting. You will have to be fingerprinted again for your LTC application even if you have been fingerprinted for another reason. Be prepared to print the "checklist" with the barcode at the end of the online application process.
Note: The license fee can vary depending on age, military and law enforcement service and income. You can view the DPS license fee schedule by clicking HERE.
4. Get Fingerprinted – Have your fingerprints taken and gather any other required documents listed on your checklist. DPS is now using your driver's license photo, so you do not have to send passport photos. Go to IdentGo.com to find an office near you.
5. Mail or Email – Mail the checklist and all the required documents (including the Certificate of Training) in one large envelope to the address on the checklist OR scan and email the documents through the DPS "Contact Us" page.
To email documents click "Browse", select the file(s), click "Open", click "Attach" then scroll down and click "Submit Form". It may take 3-4 weeks before DPS even starts processing your application and 30-90 days to receive the license.
You can track your application's progress by clicking on "Online Services" and logging in. Link to DPS "Contact Us" page – click HERE.
